Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is a small to medium size tree that originated in North America. Black Locust wood has little sapwood and heartwood which is pale yellowish brown to golden color with a darker grain color. Black Locust lumber has a straight grain with a coarse texture. Black Locust is extremely hard, heavy and strong. Black Locust also has a high resistance to rot, which makes it great for decking! Black Locust has many similar characteristics and mechanical properties of oak. Therefore, Black Locust could be used as a substitute for many of the same applications as oak, including cabinet making, furniture, millwork, molding, flooring, decking and other general construction uses. Also, Black Locust wood is used for fence post and small watercraft. For hardwood decking, as one of the most rot resistant woods, Black Locust is often used instead of the typical treated pine, which contains chemicals that many don’t prefer. Sassafras is another hardwood we provide for decking.
Cook Lumber Company, when available, has the capabilities to provide small to medium quantities of Black Locust lumber and decking to companies worldwide while complying with all national and international lumber laws.
